The "Hidden Secret" That's Right In Front Of The Next Generations Eyes...

There’s this absolutely majestic & phenomenal commencement speech by David Foster Wallace, author of Infinite Jest, to the 2005 graduating class from Kenyon College… it’s titled “this is water” - and the power held within it is unexplainable for young athletes & adolescents...

Fish - The Youth Academy

There are two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way who says "morning boys, how's the water..."

The two young fish swim on for a bit until eventually, one looks at the other and says "what the hell is water"

Technically, the fish cannot see the water, nor does it know what it truly is, but it exists…

The point is that the most obvious, important realities of life are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about...

And there is so much power within this, as it poses the question...

does something need to be seen in order for it to truly exist… to truly be ‘real’”

We cannot see oxygen, but we believe in it and it fuels us…
We cannot see gravity, yet we believe it exists and it keeps us grounded

The fish is always to know last that it’s in water…
It just is...

And so, who’s to say that there’s power within some of these other “truths” that we cannot see…

Who’s to say that ‘belief’ doesn’t hold the key to achieving the goals and aspirations we all set ourselves…

As when you look at those we deem as “successful”, the one commonality between them is that the foundation they build themselves on is the unrivalled belief they have in themselves

Gravity - The Youth Academy

It’s a cliche…
But we know cliches are true…
And if you choose to not believe in yourself, nobody else will

Even more so, what if there’s truth behind our current thoughts shaping our future realities…

What if we chose to believe in that…
Like we do in oxygen, gravity, and so much more

What if we took action upon it & began to believe so much in ourselves & our potential that we match our behaviours and actions with it...

Perhaps we’d find this “secret” we’re all searching for… Which, in fact, is hidden right in front of our eyes

Like oxygen is…
Like gravity is…
Like water is to fish...

This “hidden secret” that is belief in ourselves… and that our potential truly is nearly limitless

And so, instead of ostracising young athletes & adolescents & showing them solely their perceived "limitations"... imagine the endless possibilities that would arise from focusing solely on developing, cultivating, and building this belief they have in themselves
