How To Go From Autopilot To Decision Maker
Motivation is garbage. It doesn't exist. It's never there when you need it - and it's based off the lie that you must "feel" a certain way in order to achieve something - which is complete BS. How often do you say "tomorrow" or "Monday" only for them to roll around, and your motivation is gone...
There is nothing missing from our lives except taking action. Derek Sivers said it best with "if all we needed was information we'd all be millionaires with six-pack abs" - and I love to add extrinsic motivation to this list. As when you look at the world today, we don't lack information or external motivation - it is at the touch of our fingertips - yet for some reason, we do not take action
And when you look at the mind, it is designed to stop us from doing anything designed to hurt us. The biggest enforcer of this, and thus the killer of action, is hesitation. It's something known as the spotlight effect, where the brain magnifies risk if we hesitate and think. We don't stop and hesitate when tying our shoes, brushing our teeth... so when we hesitate about doing some training or putting forth our opinion in front of our friends, our brain thinks something must be wrong... there must be danger ahead
And any 'motivation' you had goes flying out the window
But it is here that your power lies... you simply have to get out of your own head. You have the knowledge of what to do already inside of you
You know what to do..
The answer is inside of you...
You deserve to change...
But for some reason you constantly put it off - even though, without a doubt, you've scoured social media and have an album full of motivational phrases. And it's because you need to search within for the motivation. It must be intrinsic. And when we're forced to do things
How to take Action - Countdown - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 - then act
Don't discount the power of this for its simplicity - as it's designed to get you outside your own head, and stop thinking. This interrupts habit loops that we've created for ourselves, and minimises the dreaded spotlight effect
- External motivation is garbage, it's a lie that will only ever produce short-term results
- "The Spotlight Effect" is an effect our brain uses to magnify risk and stop us from doing things it believes will 'hurt us', like speaking the truth or putting forth our ideas and opinions
- You aready know what you need to do, all that is missing is action
- Countdown 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and then take action on the first step, like getting changed into your training clothes, or opening the fridge and grabbing some fruit
