mindset bite #020 - how to make 2018 your greatest year yet...

In the past, we've discussed how to NOT set new year resolutions and instead think about experiences instead... We've also discussed how an "if, then" mindset will only lead you to frustration...

Today, to begin 2018 off with a bang, we're going to discuss how you can set yourself up so that it's your best year yet!

If there's one thing we cannot comprehend, it's how people always "wait" until it's "time" to make changes...

I'll begin Monday...
I'll begin on January 1st...

The real question is, why can't you begin right now, right this very second... what makes those dates so 'special'? We've found that they're excuses in a sense, they let people off the hook

But the good news is, you can make the conscious decision to make a change right now - and in doing so, you can begin to build 2018 into your year

It all begins with some dreaming and answering the question, "if I were to meet myself in 12 months time, who do I want to meet? What have I experienced in 2018? How have I grown as an athlete and a person? What squads or teams have I made and what new skills do I have?"

"when you don't know what harbour you're sailing for, no wind is the right wind" - Seneca

When we begin with the end in mind... when we identify where we desire to get to, we can reverse engineer it and identify what we need to work on & how we need to grow in order to get there

There's an old saying that we shouldn't focus on destroying the old, but on building the new - and that should be your focus here... in order to become the person you aspire to become at the end of 2018, how do you need to grow and develop yourself physically and mentally?

Do we need better sport-specific skills? Excellent! Set an intention to work on them daily...
Do we need more strength on the ball, better balance, or more explosiveness and speed? Fantastic! We can work on these for a few hours each week...
Do you need more confidence & self-belief? That's great news, as they're skills that can be cultivated with time...

Or perhaps you need to work on keeping your head up when things get tough and focusing on only that which you can control... and the best news is that with energy, focus, and time - you can do just that

Once we've identified these skills we need to develop, it's all about setting the intention and plan to help us develop them - and here, we love to set 1-3 actionable step we can take each day/week...

Need more speed? Sprint hills once a week, strengthen your legs in a gym setting 1-2 times a week and commit 2 hours a week to learning about proper sprinting technique and practicing drills... with enough time, your speed will begin to pick up

It's honestly that simple, but please note the cliche that it's not easy... But it is all powerful in helping you give yourself the best chance in making 2018 your greatest year yet :)

Actionable Tips/Questions:

  1. Ask yourself the question: "if I were to meet myself in 12 months time, who do I want to meet? What have I experienced in 2018? How have I grown as an athlete and a person? What squads or teams have I made and what new skills do I have?"
  2. Identify the physical and mental skills you need to develop in order to become that person and have those experiences/make those squads
  3. Break them down into 1-3 actionable steps you can make daily/weekly
  4. Do the work
