kids on the kouch #002 w/ netballer & sprinter Janas Burgess

Janas is a jill-of-all-trades, representing at incredibly high-levels in a myriad of sports, including netball and athletics

We sat down to discuss her viewpoints on failure, fear, adversity, pressure and the power of belief in ourselves...

What do you think of when you hear the word failure? And do you have a favourite failure?
I think it's a way that allows us to commit ourselves and come back stronger and better next time. Where we can break down what went right and what went wrong. A favourite failure was not making the Newcastle U/15 Netball team and getting a shot with another organisation, only to go and beat the Newcastle side comprehensibly at State Age and finish higher than them

What comes to mind when you think of the word fear?
It's something that may hold you back from achieving more... it could be embarrassment or something else. I've faced many "fears" as being a part of The Academy and doing things that I didn't think I could do

What are your thoughts on adversity? Do we move toward it or away from it?
I think it depends on the person. I don't think we should ever hold ourselves back, we can always try, and there may be a second chance but we should always aim to take the first chance we get

How would you finish this... "It all comes down to..."
How much determination you have, what you put into it, your thoughts on your ability and how much you can tie into your own belief

Where do you think pressure comes from?
Parents, coaches, ourselves.... Personally, I place most pressure on myself, I internalise it as I tend not to take others opinions to heart. Everything comes down to how we react to certain situations and that's the base on how we take our next action

What's your goal for 2020?
Make it to nationals for a sport and never settle...
