mindset bite #004 - the best idea's you'll ever have...

They come when life is most quiet. When you "slow down". When you're unplugged from everything...

From your phone. From people. From music and podcasts. From this "reality" we've created for ourselves

New ideas are formed via the coming together of old(er) ideas... It's a form of integrative thinking... like Sherlock Holmes connecting one dot of the mystery to the next with some string on his wall

And there's this powerful equation known as "idea's in = idea's out" - and whilst it's true that we need to take in phenomenal ideas in order to integratively think, it's the ideas out that matter most

And these ideas out stem from when your subconscious mind takes over... it's when you have that eureka moment... it's the idea you have in the shower, on a walk, or as you're drifting off to sleep

It's in this eureka moment that life is at it's quietest... and it's this eureka moment atmosphere you should seek when seeking new ideas and clarity

There's an exceptional book "A Technique for Producing Ideas" by James Webb Young that delves into this phenomena - it's so short you can read it in an hour... In it's simplest terms, here are the steps:

  1. Write down everything you can about a specific idea onto notecards of paper

  2. When you can't think of anything else to write, shuffle them around & create new combinations...

  3. When you can't do this any longer, pack them up, put them away, and leave it - go for a walk, get on with life, leave it alone...

Simple.

The work is now up to your unconscious mind, and it will brew on creating these ideas like a fine wine is created in an oak barrel deep in a cellar. And it's this subconscious mind + quietness + time that will bring the best idea's you'll ever have...

ACTIONABLE TIPS/QUESTIONS:

  • Ask yourself what "idea" you need to create or part of life you need clarity on...

  • Do the work of thinking hard about it, coming up with different idea's, scenarios and combinations...

  • De-stress. Unplug. Get away from it all and let your subconscious mind work its magic
