062 - demanding excellence of yourself to achieve your goals...

"we are what we repeatedly do, excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit"
- Aristotle

One of the things that we demand of ourselves here at The Academy, and of the kids we're blessed to help, is excellence in everything they do. This isn't an end result we're after, it's an effort that's equal to 100% of whatever they have at that present task they're attempting

It's our way of trying to educate and teach them how to stay in the present moment and focus on the task at hand, not letting the mind wander to what was in the past, and what might be in the future

There's this excellent little excerpt in Tim Ferriss " Tribe of Mentors" that delves into how excellence is simply the next 5 minutes... how can we win this next 5 minute block, and then the next one... how can we break the macro of our days down into the micro tasks and focus on executing them to the best of our ability

It ties into NFL great Bo Eason's concept and mantra of outworking the competition on this play, on this training session, for this day, for this week, for this season, for my career...

And it's a powerful little reframe that YA + A's can use to stay present, stay on task, and also let go of some control and perfection...

How is that possible though? Well, perfection isn't just about control, it's also about letting go... letting go of the fact that you may not have it some days - and that's perfectly okay - as you just have to win more than half...

To make 2018 your year, here's how you need to break it down from a macro to a micro level...

  1. Focus on winning 10 of yours hours today and you win that day
  2. Win 4 days a week and you've won the week
  3. Win 3 weeks a month and you've won the month
  4. Win 7 months a year and you've won the year

7 months, that's it - it's the base amount needed to win the year. You can strive for better and shoot for 8, 9, 10 or even 11 months - but let go and know that it's okay if you don't this time around

Pursue excellence for this next 5 minutes, and see where it takes you...

Actionable Tips + Questions:

  • What 1-3 tasks do I need to focus on and execute in order to win my day today?
  • What tasks need doing in order for me to win my week? Is it me not getting upset at myself, not shooting for perfection and trying to control everything... is it giving your all at every single training session and leaving knowing you left nothing to chance?
